CAN & SHOULD WE COMMUNICATE WITH THE DEAD?
God would not forbid us to communicate with the dead, if it were not possible for at least some of us to actually do so. While many of these spiritual contacts may be demonic spirits who pretend to be departed loved ones, there are biblical examples of human beings communicating with those who have died.
Many professing believers, and most unbelievers, mock the idea of a spiritual world with spirits, demons, and angels. What should we believe, and what (if anything), should we do concerning the realm of the dead and spiritual beings?
ISAIAH CHAPTER 8
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
It is foolish to deny the reality of the spiritual realm, but it is even more foolish to attempt to seek information and guidance from those who deal in it. (because they have NO LIGHT in them)
The ONLY spiritual being we are encouraged to seek out, is God Himself. Even when we seek to communicate with God, we are only allowed to do so in the name of Jesus!
FIRST BOOK OF TIMOTHY CHAPTER 2
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
This verse teaches us that Jesus is the ONLY mediator between us and the spiritual world. He existed as God before creation, and He became flesh and lived on earth as a man. (and died for us) No other human being has the right to become a go-between the physical and spiritual worlds. (including those classified as saints)
God has the option to send an angel, or a word of prophecy, but these are actions that originate by His will. We should not seek out the guidance of an angel, a departed saint, or those who dabble in the occult. God is serious about such things, see what His instructions were to His people:
EXODUS CHAPTER 28
18 Thou shalt not suffer (allow) a witch to live.
DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 18
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13 Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
The Lord is very specific about these things, to attempt to make contact with spirits is FORBIDDEN. If you ignore His commands, you place yourself in a very terrible position. You alienate yourself from God, and you befriend those who have declared war on God. (and were kicked out of heaven with Lucifer) What a tragic and certain damnation you insure for your soul!
Read what a terrible mistake it is, to IGNORE the word of God:
FIRST SAMUEL CHAPTER 28
6 And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
10 And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
I can think of nothing worse than to be cut off from God, and for Him to call me His enemy! This story about Samuel and the witch of Endor should put this matter to rest. It is clear she had the ability to conjure up spirits, and deal in the black arts. There were even laws against these things, which is more evidence that occult powers exist. Would there be a law requiring a drivers license, if there was no such things as motor vehicles?
Nothing good, can be derived from doing what is clearly EVIL. The verses below indicate that even when a prophet is right on the money, they must still be judged by their motivation. If their words are of God, they will seek to lead you to Jesus Christ and His salvation. As time as we know it winds down, many people will be deceived by miracles and wonders.
DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 13
1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Don't you see? This spiritual battle will clearly indicate what side you are REALLY on, as it continues to heat up. You cannot hardly watch a TV show today, which does not include some references to the occult. The problem is, the TV people make HERO'S out of witches and wizards, but they usually portray a believer as an unthinking FOOL.
Jesus said that many would do wonders in His name, but that He NEVER KNEW THEM. If you are playing with FIRE, you had better quit before you ignite a flame that will never be quenched. If you want to communicate with the spiritual world, call upon the Father in heaven in the name of Jesus. He is the ONLY ONE who can really help you, all others will simply do their best to lead you to destruction...
